Please Don’t Hurt My Friend
(Probably) way before you were born, I attended nursing school in Atlanta, Georgia. I had no car, and neither did my friends, so we were dependent on city transportation, i.e., the bus.
A Harrowing Experience
Betty and I went to the city to shop for a friend’s bridal shower. We loaded our arms with kitchen goods: dish drying rack, broom, mop, bucket, and who knows what else! We looked like peddlers. While waiting for the bus to take us back to the dorm, a beggar approached Betty.
“Give me a little kiss,” he said.
Betty gave him an emphatic “No!” and walked away. But the guy was persistent. He probably liked her gorgeous red hair.
“Give me a little kiss,” he repeated.
Betty backed away toward the closest department store. She turned to go into the store, only to find it was closed! The door to this store was at the end of a large recessed area. Betty felt trapped. I saw the panic on her face, so I approached cautiously, half hysterical, half panicked.
Though the sidewalk was still bustling with people, no one stopped to help us. By this time, Betty was screaming at the guy to leave her alone. I must have been helpless. Betty thought I was hopeless.
Thank goodness our bus arrived, we boarded and sat down. Understandably, Betty proceeded to let me have it. She told me that I was following the man, tugging on his shirt sleeve, pleading weakly, “Please don’t hurt my friend.”
Helpless, hopeless, and now wretched! 😢️
